브리스톨 출신으로 런던에서 성장하여, 다우닝대학(Downing College)에서 현대 및 중세 언어를 공부하고, 케임브리지대학교(University of Cambridge)를 졸업(B.A.)하였다. 그 후 런던대학교(University of London)에서 신학을 공부하고(B.D., M.Th.), 케임브리지로 돌아와서 트리니티대학(Trinity College)에서 박사학위를 받았다(M.A. Cantab., Ph.D.). 회중교회에서 성직을 받고 성공회에서 사제가 된 후 케임브리지 홀리트리니티교회(Holy Trinity Church)에서 사역하였다. 리즈대학교(University of Leeds)에서 구약과 히브리어 교수 활동을 시작하여 케임브리지대학교에서 가르치다 런던대학교 구약학 교수로 있으면서 킹스칼리지(King’s College) 학장과 신학부 학장을 역임하고 은퇴 후에도 명예교수로 활동하였으며, 구약학회(SOTS) 대표를 역임한 바 있다. 저서로는 Studies in the religious tradition of the Old Testament (SCM Press, 1987), The Second Book of Samuel (Cambridge University Press, 1977), The Cambridge History of the Bible: Volume 1, From the Beginnings to Jerome (Cambridge University Press, 1970) 등이 있다.
