〈Korean 말말말 사전〉은 일차적으로 한국어를 배우는 외국인의 말하기 숙련도를 향상시키기 위한 자가 학습서이다. 한국어를 능숙하게 잘 말하려면 많은 문법들을 정확하게 아는 것도 중요하지만 한국인이 자주 쓰는 표현들을 빠르게 이해하고 상황과 맥락에 맞게 쓸 줄 알아야 한다. 이와 같은 생각으로 이 사전의 집필진은 한국어 구어 말뭉치를 구축하고 빈도, 유용성, 실제성, 학습 가능성, 교수 가능성 등의 기준에 따라 말하기 문법 항목들을 추출하여 800개의 표제어로 압축하였고 유사표현 2,300개를 제시하였다. 이 책의 1부는 ‘의사소통 기능’을 중심으로 하여 말하기 문법 항목을 재구하여 제시한다. 의사소통 기능은 Omaggio(2001)를 참조하여 한국어의 특성에 맞게 재분류하였다. 만약 집들이를 앞두고 있다면 ‘초대하기’를, 친구가 고민이 있어 보이면 ‘상담하기’를, 중요한 전화를 걸어야 한다면 ‘전화하기’ 기능을 찾아 해당 말하기 문법들을 공부하도록 설계하였다. 이 책의 2부는 ‘사전’의 형식을 띠고 있다. 제2부가 가나다 순서로 배열된 것은 사용자의 편의성을 높이기 위함이다. 이 책은 무엇보다도 한국어 말하기와 듣기 숙련도를 높이는 데 유용할 것이다. 이 책으로 공부할 때 특정한 기능을 잘 수행해야 하는 시간을 앞둔 학습자라면 1부를 펼쳐서 예측되는 ‘기능’ 분류 항목을 선택하여 집중적으로 공부하면 된다. 2부의 내용은 처음부터 끝까지 통독하며 읽어보는 것이 가장 좋다. 특히 예문은 음성 파일을 들으면서 여러 번 소리 내어 읽어보기를 권장한다. 〈Korean 말말말 사전〉에 등장하는 말하기 문법 항목들은 엄밀히 말해서 사전적 정의가 불가능한 것도 적지 않다. 구어로 된 의사소통은 ‘누구와 어디에서, 언제, 무엇을 말하는가’에 따라 그 의미가 매번 달라지기 때문이다. 이를 고려하여 가장 흔히 사용되는 상황·맥락에서의 일반적인 정의 순으로 그 의미를 설명했으며 가급적 비격식체와 격식체로 구분하고 의미당 두 개씩의 예문을 제시하였다. 예문의 실제성을 높이기 위하여 영화, 드라마, TV 예능 프로그램이나 다큐 등에서 사용된 대화문을 포함시키고 그 출처를 밝혔다. 이 책으로 한국어 말하기(구어) 문법을 가르치려는 교사가 있다면 일종의 교수문법(teaching grammar)으로 활용하면 좋을 것이다. 특히 초임 한국어 교사가 특정 기능이나 말하기 문법 항목을 어떻게 다루어야 할지 막막하거나, 말하기 및 듣기 수업을 담당하면서 기존의 문법서에서 다루지 않은 회화체 표현들을 어떻게 설명할지 알고 싶다면 이 책이 도움이 될 것이다. 3부에서는 실제 한국어 수업에서 말하기 문법을 가르치기 위한 교수 모형도 초급과 중급, 고급 모두 제시하였으니 본인의 수업에 지혜롭게 적용하고 응용하기 바란다.
