Number theory의 study subject(연구 주제)는 크게 두 가지로 classify(분류)할 수 있는데, 하나는 1과 그 자신 이외에는 divisor(약수)가 없는 positive integer인 prime number(소수)에 대한 연구이고, 다른 하나는 equation(방정식)의 integer value(정수 해)에 대한 연구이다. 이 때문에 일반인들은 number theory를 대단히 abstract(추상적)하고 unpractical(비실용적)한 학문으로 느낄 수도 있다. 하지만 number theory는 amateur(비전문가)와 학생들에게 mathematics에서 가장 인기 있는 branch(과목)이자, modern algebra(현대 대수학)를 공부하기 위한 mandatory course(필수 과목)이다.

Number theory is one of the oldest parts of mathematics, alongside geometry, and has been studied at least since ancient times. Because of its solely mathematical nature, number theory was thought to be without practical applications, but has since been used in the development of cryptography and cryptanalyst is in the twentieth century. Number theory has attracted many best mathematicians in history: Euclid, Diophantus, Fermat, Legendre, Euler, Gauss and Jacobi, all made huge contributions to its development.

Example 2　The four accused, A, B, C, and D stated their case to a prosecutor as follows.

A. C is a culprit. B. I'm not a culprit. C. D is a culprit. D. C lied.

Arrange the culprits orderly in case only the statement of one culprit is true and arrange the culprits orderly in case only the statement of one culprit is false. (But, only one of the four accused is said to be a culprit.)
