The fourth concept book in the Nouvelle Vague Art series, _______ of Light presents a unique archival record of artist Sunny Kim, compiled over five years of close dialogue and documentation. Unlike typical exhibition catalogs that focus on finalized works by established artists, this book captures the artist’s early pieces and ongoing processes, offering a distinct contribution to contemporary art history.
배민영 평론가가 책임 집필한 네 번째 컨셉북에는 작가의 국내 활동이 시작되었던 2020년부터 작가의 활동 과정에서 기록된 배민영 평론가의 에세이 12편과 전시서문 3편, 조은영 큐레이터의 전시서문과 작가 인터뷰가 국문과 영문으로 수록되어 있습니다.
The book is authored by art critic Minyoung Bae, who served as the lead writer and has closely accompanied the artist’s journey since 2020. It features 12 essays and 3 exhibition texts written by Bae, along with a curatorial statement and an in-depth interview with the artist by curator Eunyoung Cho. All texts are presented in both Korean and English.
김선희 작가 본인과 7명의 포토그래퍼가 긴밀하게 기록해온 수천장의 작품 및 과정 사진 중 114컷의 이미지를 선정하여 총 10개의 챕터에 담았습니다. 모든 도판과 수록된 이미지에 대한 전시명, 포토그래퍼, 연도 정보는 200~203쪽 Page information에 상세히 기록해 두었습니다. 또한 글로벌 에디션으로 제작, 유통하기 위해 한글 원고를 후면 Appendix(부록)에 수록하고 이은지 예술 전문 번역가가 섬세하게 옮긴 영문 원고가 디자인과 어우러져 책의 가치와 출간 의미를 더했습니다.
From thousands of images taken over the years by the artist and seven collaborating photographers, 114 photographs were selected and organized into 10 chapters. Detailed credits-exhibition titles, photographer names, and dates-can be found in the “Page Information” section (pp. 200-203).
또한 작업의 특성을 반영하여 책을 열고 닫는 과정에서 빛이 스며들기도 하고 빛 그림자가 책 첫 페이지로 드리우기도 하는 빛의 순환과정을 책 디자인에 담았고 독자들은 김선희 작가의 의도를 특수 양장 제본으로 하나의 작품이 된 책을 통해 경험할 수 있습니다.
Reflecting the artist’s practice, the book is designed to physically embody the presence of light. As it opens and closes, light naturally filters through, casting shadows and shifting reflections on the first page-echoing the cyclical nature of light that underpins the artist’s work. Through this special hardcover format, readers can experience the book itself as an extension of the artist’s installation practice.
