Special Lecture on Korean Paintings는 저자 오주석이 전국을 돌며 우리 미술의 아름다움에 대해 강연한 내용을 더 많은 사람들과 함께 나누고자 책으로 출간하며 독자를 만나게 되었다. 이 책을 통해 저자는 서양 문물에 길들여진 한국 사람들에게 우리의 전통과 문화를 소중히 여기라는 메시지를 담아 신명 나고 재치 있게 옛 그림을 읽는 방법을 풀어간다.
모두 세 장으로 구성된 이 책의 첫 번째 장은 김홍도의 그림들로 시작한다. '옛사람의 눈으로 보고, 옛사람의 마음으로 느낄 것.' 저자의 말을 새겨 그림을 보면 우리가 알던 『씨름도』는 그림이 아닌 실물로 눈앞에 씨름판이 펼쳐진다. 오른쪽 상단에서부터 읽어나가야 하는 우리의 그림을 서양 풍습에 익숙해져 왼쪽에서 읽어나가면 그림을 읽어낼 수도 없고 재미를 찾기란 더욱 어려운 일이 된다. 두 번째 장에서는 옛 그림에 담긴 우주관과 인생관을 살펴본다. 세계 최고의 호랑이 그림 『송하맹호도』를 감상하며 음양오행을 기초로 하여 우리 조상들이 종이 위에 풀어낸 마음을 느껴볼 수 있다. 마지막으로 세 번째 장에서는 그림 속에 녹아있는 조선의 역사와 문화를 짚어본다. 저자가 옛 그림을 공부하면서 다시 꼼꼼히 따져본 조선 왕조는 519년간 지속된, 검소하고 도덕적이면서도 수준 높은 문화를 향유한 나라였다. 『이채 초상』을 비롯한 극사실주의 초상화에는 예쁜 모습보다 진실하고 참된 모습을 중시했던 조선사람들의 마음이 그대로 드러난다.
책장을 펼치면 책 안에 고스란히 실제 강연장의 분위기가 담겨 있고, 이야기의 흐름에 따라 그림의 전체 때로는 세부가 슬라이드 넘어가듯 제시된다. 독자는 '청중 웃음,' '청중 큰 박수' 등 문장 사이사이 청중의 반응을 보노라면 현장에 있는 듯한 느낌으로 이야기를 따라가게 되고, 어느덧 그림을 읽는 눈과 마음이 트인다. 화가의 생애와 철학, 회화적 기법을 바탕으로 그림을 설명하는 기존의 난해한 미술서와 달리, Special Lecture on Korean Paintings는 어떤 그림을 보게 되더라도 능동적으로 감상할 수 있도록 자세를 잡아주는 친근한 미술 입문서이다.

Special Lecture on Korean Paintings provides readers with a comprehensive and readable introduction to major aspects of old Korean arts. The volume explores the vast heritage of Korean paintings, providing a rich panorama of information that stretches across the entire spectrum of Korean paintings, which will have wide appeal, not least to art lovers and students of Korean Studies.
The book is largely composed of three parts: Part I, Principles for Appreciation of Old Korean Paintings, introduces basic principles for appreciation of Korean art. The author suggests to see old Korean paintings through the eyes of the past and feel them with the heart of the past; Part II, Heart of the Ancestors Expressed in Old Paintings, explains the life and wisdom of Koreans of the past, including their view of the universe and life based on the theory of yin and yang and the Five Elements; Part III, History and Culture in the Joseon Period Examined through Old Paintings, presents the beautiful and truthful mind of old Koreans revealed in their portraits and paintings. The author contends that old Korean portraits or calligraphy works were a true reflection of the spirit and mind of the people, whereas today's counterparts are devoid of such spirit. To add more, the appendix to this book covers the art and life of Kim Hong-do, who was lauded by contemporaries as a "national artist," including 12 of his representative works.
Throughout the book, the author takes a humanities approach to various topics, ranging from the climate, history of Korea, and Chinese poetry to human spirit and aesthetics of Korean people. Also, he maintains his objectivity as an art historian and, at the same time, takes great pride in the Korean history and culture, and such attitude and narrative will make you feel as if you're right in middle of the lecture and really listening to him while you're just reading this book.
