듣는 음악을 넘어 보는 음악으로, 화상학적 연구방법으로 다룬 대구음악사 대구의 지도와 모습을 담아 전체적인 흐름을 설정했고 ‘음악’이라는 예술이 대구의 지역, 문화와 어떻게 융화하고 발전했는지 변화를 보여준다. ‘달성도’라는 고지도부터 일제강점기에 제작된 지적도도 제시해 대구가 어떻게 바뀌어 왔는지를 나타냈고, 달서교와 영남제일관 등을 담은 사진으로 대구의 생활상도 피력했다. 저자는 해당 지도와 사진을 제시해 과거와 현재의 문화를 비교할 수 있게 했고 계산성당 등의 원형도 파악할 수 있도록 구성했다. 특히 낙동강을 오가는 배조차도 이 책에서는 음악 전파에 앞장섰던 선교사들의 이동 수단이 되는 등 철저히 음악사적 관점에서 사료를 해석해 정체성을 더했다. 1900년대부터 1980년대까지 10년 단위, 음악의 도입 배경, 변천사 정리 과거 일제강점기 무렵, 대구에 전해진 서양음악의 거점은 주로 교회였다. 선교사의 선교활동에서 활용한 찬송가 등이 대구에 전파됐고 저자는 이 선교사의 사진과 이들의 활동사진 등을 모아 설명을 곁들였다. 우물 정(井)자 형으로 생긴 틀에 피아노를 실어 옮기는 기구와 신명여학교 학생의 피아노 연주 모습 등 도입 초기를 기록한 사료를 더해 이해를 도왔다. 이들 사료 중에는 단체 사진과 건물의 외형도 있으나 저자는 단순히 문화나 생활상으로 보지 않았고 엄격하게 역사적 해석으로 음악사의 흐름과 변천사를 설명했다. 1920년대에 작성된 악보와 작곡집을 비롯해 박태준과 권태호 등 음악사적 인물의 모습과 그들의 삶도 포함돼 있다. 후반기로 갈수록 오페라 등 세부적으로 확산하는 음악 장르도 한 권에 들어 있다. 이밖에 1980년대 이후로는 대구시립합창단과 대구관악제 등이 등장한 시점을 비롯한 기록, 음악이 대중화하는 과정, 교육청 등 기관 차원의 움직임, 음악가와 단체 등의 활동 양상도 담겨 있어 대구의 음악사를 한눈에 파악할 수 있다.
