화엄경을 가장 심도 있게 해석하였다는 봉은사 소장 목판본에 새겨진 청량국사의 『화엄경수소연의초(華嚴經隨演義)』를 번역한 『화엄경청량소(華嚴經淸凉)』제27권 제8 삼회보광명전법회 ① [제38 이세간품 ① - ④] 반산 스님의 『화엄경청량소』는 『화엄경』을 중국의 청량 국사가 해석하고 주석을 단 것으로, 자세한 해설과 방대한 분량으로 화엄경의 진면목을 고스란히 드러내 보인 경전이다. 금번 출간된 반산 스님의 『화엄경청량소』는 봉은사 소장 목판 80권 화엄경소초회본을 원본으로 삼아 직접 원문을 입력하고 소()와 초()를 번역하였으며 더불어 스님의 견해를 덧붙였다. 스님은 직역(直譯)을 원칙으로 하여 원본의 진면목을 그대로 보여 주고자 노력하였다. 스님은 지난 20여 년 동안 번역 불사에 전념하여 7처 9회 39품의 모든 번역을 마쳤으며 금번 제7회 재회보광명전법회와 제8회 삼회보광명전법회 총 6권을 출간하였다. 마지막 법회인 서다원림법회 총 6권은 올가을에 출간하여 완간을 마칠 예정이다. 봉은사 소장 목판본은 원래 조선 숙종 15년(1689)에 임자도에서 발견했던 성총 스님이 판각 불사를 통하여 유통시킨 징광사(澄光寺) 판본이 그 원본이었다. 그러나 1770년에 화재로 소실되었고, 영조 50년(1774)에 설파상언(雪坡尙彦)이 판각한 영각사 판본이 유통되었는데 이 판본도 역시 1950년의 전란으로 없어졌지만 그 경본만은 남아 있어서 이를 바탕으로 하여 철종대(1855-1856)에 영기(永奇) 스님이 각인(刻印)한 봉은사판이 현존하게 되었다. 이 봉은사판은 영각사판을 복각(復刻)한 것으로 중간에 45장을 보충하였다 한다. 이것이 그동안 강원 대교과(大敎科)의 교재로 쓰여 왔던 유일한 현존판이 되는 것이다.(海住스님 저『화엄의 세계』 참조)
