이소설은 1862년 임술년 진주 인근 약 71개 지역에서 일어난 농민항쟁을 다룬 장편소설이다. 『1862,』에서는 실재 진주민란이 일어난 시간과 장소는 물론 민란을 주도했던 인물은 물론이고 연루자들의 실명이 등장하면서도, 그 안에 허구적 인물과 사건을 만들어 역사적 사건의 실체를 드러냄과 동시에 이야기로서의 재미까지 담아내고 있다. 장편소설 『1862,』는 총 5부로 구성되었다. 1, 2부에서는 민란이 일어나게 된 배경을, 신임 진주 목사 홍병원, 경상우병사 백낙신과 민란의 주동자인 유계춘 그리고 주변 인물들을 통해 알려주고 있다. 3, 4부는 민란이 일어나는 상황이고, 5부는 민란에 관한 조사와 치죄하는 과정이 안핵사로 파견된 박규수를 중심으로 그려진다. 최희영 작가는 『1862,』를 집필하기 위해 진주를 여러 차례 방문하는 것은 물론이고 진주민란을 주제로 하는 학술논문과 실록의 탐독을 통해 역사적 사실의 실체를 추적한다. 민란이 일어난 각 지역을 답사하며 얻은 정보를 바탕으로 실재 민란이 일어난 시간순으로 이야기를 이끌고 있다. 특히 민란의 정점이었던 ‘임술년, 이월 열사흘’은 ‘아침나절’, ‘점심나절’, ‘저녁나절’로 나누어 서술하면서 각 지역의 상황까지 세밀하고도 긴장감 넘치게 묘사한다. 그렇기에 독자들은 마치 1862년으로 직접 가서 그 민란의 소용돌이 속에서 생생하게 전하는 현장 리포트를 보는듯한 착각에 빠질 정도이다. 장편소설 『1862,』는 사건, 인물, 인용 가요 등등이 확고한 작가의 역사 인식 기반 위에 튼실하고도 촘촘하게 연결되어 있다. 실록과 학술논문에서 밝히고 있는 진주민란의 실체와 작가의 상상력이 만들어낸 사건과 인물이 합쳐지면서 민란 속 당시 농민들의 삶이 사실대로 나타난다. 작가는 또한 전국을 방랑하는 39살 수운 최재우를 등장시켜서 멀리는 홍경래의 난부터 진주민란까지 모든 농민반란이 결국에는 동학농민항쟁으로 귀결된다는 것을 암시하고 있다. 소설에서는 실록에 없는 유계춘과 매서의 인연만이 아니라, 실존 인물들의 새로운 성격화를 시도하고 있다. 대표적인 인물이 교리 이명윤이다. 그는 관직을 마다하고 향리에 묻혀 사는, 고고한 선비인 듯하지만 기회주의자로 묘사된다. 양반이라고, 마을의 어른이라고 아랫것들을 종 부리듯 하던 평소 행동이 정작 민란을 당해서는 농민들 편에서 선 것인 양, 집으로 쳐들어온 초군(나무꾼)들에게 밥을 대접한다. 최희영 작가는 이런 모습을 리얼하게 서술해 양반 혹은 지식인들의 이중성을 여과 없이 보여준다. 『1862,』이런 실존 인물들과 소설적 허구 인물들이 이러저러한 인연으로 얽히며 실제 진주민란의 진행과정 속 이야기의 흥미를 더 하고 있다.
