이번에 간행되는 제2권은 1884년 12월에 일어난 갑신정변부터 1885년까지를 다루었습니다. 불과 1년 1개월의 짧은 기간이지만, 본문 쪽수가 750쪽 정도로 적지 않은 분량입니다. 이 자료집에는 조선 정부의 자료, 미국의 한국 관련 각종 외교문서, 미국 북장로교회 해외선교본부의 자료 등 공적 자료들과 함께, 알렌의 일기 등이 주로 수록되어 있습니다. 이 책에 담긴 자료의 가장 중요한 주제는 알렌의 제안으로 1885년 4월 10일 설립된 한국 최초의 서양식 병원인 제중원입니다. 먼저 조선 정부가 제중원의 원활한 운영을 위해 나름대로 애쓰는 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 미국 북장로교회는 알렌에 이어, 언더우드, 헤론을 파송하였고, 1885년 7월 한국 선교부가 정식으로 조직되어 활동하게 됩니다. 하지만 각자의 입장이 같을 수 없었고, 알렌이 독주한다고 느끼기 시작하면서 갈등이 표출되기 시작합니다. 이런 가운데 알렌은 대학교 설립을 추진하였지만, 미국 공사의 반대로 제중원에 부속된 의학교의 설립을 추진하였습니다. 알렌의 ‘병원 설립안’이 제출되기 제중원의 설립 이 시기에는 주한 미국 공사의 위치가 격하되어 루셔스 H. 푸트 공사가 이임하고, 대신 해군 무관 조지 C. 포크가 임시 공사로 임명되었습니다. 포크는 알렌과 상당히 우호적인 관계를 유지하였으며, 알렌은 여러 고급 정보들을 접하였고 이를 선교본부에 보고하였습니다. 서울에 주재하는 거의 모든 외교관의 주치의로도 활동하였던 알렌은 그들로부터도 많은 정보를 얻어 한국과 관련된 정세를 상당히 정확하게 파악하고 있었습니다. 또한 주치의로서 고종을 직접 접촉하는 일이 많았고, 고종이 알렌에게 의견을 구하기도 하였습니다. 이런 상황이 후에 그가 주한 미국 공사관 서기로 외교관이 이적할 수 있었던 중요한 바탕이 되었다고 할 수 있습니다.
