세상에는 지혜를 논하는 사람들과 이론들이 수없이 많으나 하나님은 잠언을 통해 친히 지혜가 무엇인지를 알려주신다. 특히 이 지혜와 명철이 “하나님의 신이 감동한” 자요 “하나님이 모든 것을 보여주시어 그보다 더 지혜롭고 명철한 사람이 없다”고 여김받은 요셉(창 41:38,39)과 “신들의 영이 있으며 명철과 총명과 비상한 지혜가 있는” 자로 인정된 다니엘(단 5:14)에게 허락된 것과 같은 지혜와 명철로 불린다는 점을 생각하면 놀라움을 금할 수 없다. 잠언을 받고 따르는 모든 성도는 요셉과 다니엘에게 허락되었던 것과 같은 무게와 본질의 지혜와 명철을 갖는 것이며 또 그래야 한다는 의미이기 때문이다. 잠언에는 요셉과 다니엘이 경험했던 놀라운 꿈이나 이적이 등장하지 않으며 또 성도들에게 그 일을 경험해야 한다는 요구도 없다. 그런데도 요셉과 다니엘이 들었던 지혜와 명철이라는 말을 사용한다. 이는 잠언 역시 하나님의 감동으로 주신 것이요 그 무게는 요셉과 다니엘이 받았던 계시와 전혀 다르지 않으며, 더 나아가 모든 성도가 필연적으로 가져야 하는 지혜는 바로 잠언에서 가르치신 길을 따라 사는 것 자체임을 알게 한다. 곧 3권 후반부에서 밝힌 대로 ‘장차 반드시 있을 영원한 심판 때 구원받을 자로 사는’ 자가 하나님께서 지혜롭다고 하시는 자요, 성도는 누구나 다 이 지혜를 얻기 위해 애써야 한다는 것이다.
