5.18은 현대사 최대의 사건이다. 어떻게 정의되느냐에 따라 국가의 정체성과 운명이 좌우된다. “민주화운동이냐 아니면 북한이 주도한 폭동이냐”, 원하던 원치 않던, 우리는 지금 햄릿이 돼 있다. 저자는 2002년부터 20년 동안 5.18의 진실을 탐구했다. 1995~1997년은 전두환에 대한 재판으로 채워져 있었다. 수사 및 재판 자료가 18만 쪽에 이른다. 이 방대한 기록을 연구목적으로 사용한 사람은 오로지 저자 한 사람밖에 없다. 이에 대한 북한기록들을 획득하고 분석한 사람도 저자뿐이었다. 이 많은 양의 자료를 감히 연구할 배짱을 가진 사람도 보이지 않았다. 5.18을 세도의 발판으로 삼는 정치세력이 있다. 5.18은 이들에게 철옹성 같은 성역이었다. 그 어디에도, 이에 도전할 용기가 보이지 않았다. 저자가 판도라 상자를 열었다. 5.18은 북한과 광주의 야합물이었다. 전남지역 17개 시-군에 위장돼 있는 44개 무기고가 불과 4시간 만에 털렸고, 교도소가 5차례 공격당했다. TNT를 가지고 광주시를 히로시마의 잿더미로 날릴 수 있는 2,100발의 폭탄을 도청에 조립해놓았다. 총상 사망자 117명 중 88명이 시민이 훔친 총기에 의해 사망했다. 이 모두는 광주의 불명예다. 그런데 저자는 이 불미스러운 행위가 북한군 소행이었다고 알려주었다. 저자는 광주의 불명예를 씻어준 고마운 사람이어야 했다. 하지만 놀랍게도 저자는 광주 최대의 공적(公敵)이 돼있다. 광주가 매머드급 재판을 걸어왔다. 서울중앙지방법원 1심 재판이 진행된 5년 동안 재판장이 4번 바뀌었다. 마지막 재판장이 광주일고 출신이었고 그는 피고인에게 2년의 징역형을 선고해놓고 광주법원으로 영전해 갔다. 이제 사건은 2심으로 넘어왔다. 여기에서 결정되면 재판은 사실상 종결된다. 여기가 바로 운명의 장인 것이다. 피고인인 저자는 5년에 걸쳐 수천 매의 답변서를 제출했지만 재판부에 허용된 시간으로는 그 모두를 소화하기 어렵다. 그래서 모든 답변서를 응축하여 마지막 심판대에 올려놓기로 했다. 유죄냐, 무죄냐, 이 한권의 책에 달려있다. 선진국에는 배심원제가 있다. 그런데 저자가 받는 재판에는 배심원이 없다. 그래서 저자는 대한민국 모든 국민에게 배심원이 되어주기를 간절히 바란다. 재판부에 제출하는 답변서를 출판한 경우는 동서고금을 통해 아마도 이 책이 유일할 것이다. 판사도, 배심원도 다 같이 읽을 이 책에는 거짓이 있으면 안 되고, 군더더기가 있어서도 안 된다. 국가의 운명이 달린 5.18재판에 부디 모든 국민이 배심원이 되어 주시기 간절히 바란다. 이 책이 바로 배심원이 되는 라이선스인 셈이다.
