Everlasting Flower: A History of Korea (A History of Korea)

Pratt, Keith  | Univ of Chicago Pr
58,580원  | 20061002  | 9781861892737
There are two starkly different Koreas that are equally important actors on today's tense geopolitical stage: South Korea, which is thriving as a democracy racing into the future as a high-tech economic powerhouse, and North Korea, a repressive dictatorship ruled by the iron inclinations of the Dear Leader. The dividing 38th Parallel is a Cold War relic that masks the deep and binding cultural ties between them, and Keith Pratt tackles here in Everlasting Flower the complexly intertwined history of the two nations. Everlasting Flower traverses the ancient physical and cultural landscape of the Koreas, spanning from the ancient states of Old Choson and Wiman Choson to the present day. Pratt reveals the rich origins of such cultural foundations as religious practices and food and drink, and he connects them to key historical developments of both nations. He also probes controversial historical events such as the abusestorture, punishment, and the "comfort women"of the Japanese occupation. Concise and richly illustrated pictorial essays augment Pratt's compelling narrative, chronicling various monuments of Korea's past, including the world's oldest observatory and the famous turtle boats. An engrossing and provocative history of the two Koreas, Everlasting Flower is an essential study of two nations that are rapidly emerging from the shadows of their looming neighborsChina and Japanand of each other as well. As the Korean peninsula becomes an increasingly important geopolitical hotspot, Everlasting Flower offers a broad perspective on this painfully divided nation.

A History of Korea Paperback (From Antiquity to the Present)

Michael J. Seth  | Rowman & Littlefield Publisher
0원  | 20110425  | 9780742567160
In this comprehensive yet compact book, Michael J. Seth surveys Korean history from Neolithic times to the present. He explores the origins and development of Korean society, politics, and its still little-known cultural heritage from their inception to the two Korean states of today. Telling the remarkable story of the origins and evolution of a society that borrowed and adopted from abroad, Seth describes how various tribal peoples in the peninsula came together to form one of the world's most distinctive communities. He shows how this ancient, culturally and ethnically homogeneous society was wrenched into the world of late-nineteenth-century imperialism, fell victim to Japanese expansionism, and then became arbitrarily divided into two opposed halves, North and South, after World War II. Tracing the past seven decades, the book explains how the two Koreas, with their deeply different political and social systems and geopolitical orientations, evolved into sharply contrasting societies. South Korea, after an unpromising start, became one of the few postcolonial developing states to enter the ranks of the first world, with a globally competitive economy, a democratic political system, and a cosmopolitan and dynamic culture. North Korea, by contrast, became one of the world's most totalitarian and isolated societies, a nuclear power with an impoverished and famine-stricken population. Seth describes and analyzes the radically different and historically unprecedented trajectories of the two Koreas, formerly one tight-knit society. Throughout, he adds a rich dimension by placing Korean history into broader global perspective and by including primary readings from each era. All readers looking for a balanced, knowledgeable history will be richly rewarded with this clear and concise book.

A History of Korea: From "land of the Morning Calm" to States in Conflict (From "Land of the Morning Calm" to States in Conflict)

Kim, Jinwung  | Indiana University Press
93,120원  | 20121105  | 9780253000248
Contemporary North and South Korea are nations of radical contrasts: one a bellicose totalitarian state with a failing economy; the other a peaceful democracy with a strong economy. Yet their people share a common history that extends back more than 3,000 years. In this comprehensive new history of Korea from the prehistoric era to the present day, Jinwung Kim recounts the rich and fascinating story of the political, social, cultural, economic, and diplomatic developments in Korea’s long march to the present. He provides a detailed account of the origins of the Korean people and language and the founding of the first walled-town states, along with the advanced civilization that existed in the ancient land of “Unified Silla.” Clarifying the often complex history of the Three Kingdoms Period, Kim chronicles the five-century long history of the Choson dynasty, which left a deep impression on Korean culture. From the beginning, China has loomed large in the history of Korea, from the earliest times when the tribes that would eventually make up the Korean nation roamed the vast plains of Manchuria and against whom Korea would soon define itself. Japan, too, has played an important role in Korean history, particularly in the 20th century; Kim tells this story as well, including the conflicts that led to the current divided state. The first detailed overview of Korean history in nearly a quarter century, this volume will enlighten a new generation of students eager to understand this contested region of Asia.

A Brief History of Korea (Isolation, War, Despotism and Revival: The Fascinating Story of a Resilient But Divided People)

Seth, Michael J.  | Tuttle Publishing
19,350원  | 20191112  | 9780804851022
Exploring Korean history from its ancient roots to the present day, A Brief History of Korea is the story of a people with a rich and united culture that has become two Koreas in modern times—one isolated and secretive and the other among the world's most successful economies. Korean culture developed on a 600-mile-long peninsula, bordered on the north by mountains and three sides by the sea, set apart from the Asian mainland. Korea was one of the last countries in Asia to be visited by Westerners and its borders have remained largely unchanged since it was unified in the seventh century. Though it is one of the world's oldest and most ethnically homogeneous states, Korea was not born in a vacuum. Geographically isolated, the country was heavily influenced by powerful China and was often used as a bridge to the mainland by Japan. Calling themselves as "a shrimp among whales," Koreans borrowed elements of government, culture and religion all the while fiercely fighting to maintain independence from powerful neighbors. This fascinating book tells the story of Korean domestic dynasties, empires and states, as well as foreign conquest, occupation and division. Today, the two Koreas are starkly different—North Korea a nation closed to the world and South Korea an economic powerhouse and center of Asian democracy. Chronicling significant events right up through 2018's Singapore Summit, author Michael J. Seth presents a relevant, interesting and important history of Korea within a larger global context. Korea's history is a turbulent one, but ultimately the story of a resistant and resourceful people in search of lasting peace.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Korean War, another inspiring story that sprouted in the midst of the war was published as a book. Joungwon Kim’s journey began when he encountered war correspondent Bill Boss from Canada, who opened his eyes to the world beyond Korea. With just $300, he embarked on his studies in the United States, ultimately earning degrees from Columbia University, Johns Hopkins SAIS, and Harvard Law School. This book vividly chronicles his encounters with key figures in academia, diplomacy, and law, painting a compelling picture of the times. Compiled posthumously by Memorial Association for Dr. Joungwon Kim in collaboration with the Aging Communication Center, this book is available in both Korean and English, with the English translation undertaken by his former student, Professor Timothy Atkinson of Seoul Foreign Language Graduate School, and reviewed by Charles Olmsted, former professor at Gimcheon University. A Trailblazing Life of “Firsts” Joungwon Kim’s life was marked by a series of historic firsts: the first Korean student at Phillips Exeter Academy (p.40), the first Korean student body president at Harvard University (p.64), the first Korean author published in the world-renowned journal Foreign Affairs (p.109), the key figure behind the introduction of Korean politicians Kim Young-sam and Kim Dae-jung to Washington’s political circles (pp.29, 115), and the first Korean lawyer to join a major Wall Street law firm (p.129). His journey across academia, diplomacy, and law offers a gripping narrative of ambition and service. A True Noblesse Oblige: A Legacy of Giving Inspired by his grandfather, who donated his entire fortune to local schools, Joungwon Kim lived a life of generosity. While at Harvard, he refused financial support from his parents, arguing that his tuition-over 20 times Korea’s per capita GDP-should instead be used to fund scholarships for 50 to 100 other Korean students (p.62). Despite earning two doctorate degrees from the most prestigious U.S. institutions, he relied primarily on scholarships and considered it his duty to repay this debt to society. Without seeking publicity, he quietly dedicated himself to philanthropy throughout his life. What We Leave Behind and How We Are Remembered Joungwon Kim’s final chapter was guided by the Aging Communication Center’s Legacy Project, which preserves personal histories as cultural heritage. This initiative donates significant life artifacts to museums and libraries, ensuring that individual legacies contribute to the collective good. His personal belongings-90 boxes of household items-were donated to seven charitable organizations, while 682 books and historical records were gifted to institutions including the War Memorial of Korea, the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History, the Presidential Archives, the Yongsan History Museum, the National Assembly Library, the Korea National Diplomatic Academy Library, and the National Library of Korea. Proceeds from book sales will be allocated to scholarship funds. A Life Devoted to Korea and Democracy Throughout his student years, Joungwon Kim displayed unwavering patriotism, hanging a large Korean flag (Taegeukgi) in his dormitory to remind himself of his homeland and family (p.48). Representing the United States at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Helsinki, he carried the Taegeukgi to promote Korea on the international stage (p.93). During Korea’s pro-democracy movement of the 1980s, his book Divided Korea became essential reading for social science students (p.164). Upon returning to Korea in 1987, he played a pivotal role in communicating the realities of Korean politics to the international community, effectively serving as the foreign press spokesperson for the United Democratic Movement (p.140).
