Alex Katz

Ratcliff, Carter  | Rizzoli
165,000원  | 20201013  | 9780847866182
The definitive Alex Katz book, like his iconic paintings, is larger than life. With more than 300 images, many unpublished, and a searching profile by an art historian who has studied the painter for more than half a century, this monograph charts the development of Katz's singular American style. 2020 GOLD WINNER OF THE FOREWORD INDIES AWARD IN ART Alex Katz has found his audience. It's not the first time. Over seven decades, the artist has developed his vision with determination as the tides of avant-garde and academic fashion ebbed and flowed. His first audience was other painters (including de Kooning and Philip Guston), and today, still, he is perhaps best understood by other artists: those who appreciate how difficult it is to make something so simple, so well. Working in a representational style while his classmates celebrated Abstract Expressionism, eschewing slick surfaces for a pared-down view while his peers went glossy with Pop, Katz cleaved to one vision, a few locations, and subjects. Katz's endurance and commitment to developing an original American style is explored in depth, from his boyhood influences to an artistic circle that included John Ashbery, Ted Berrigan, Lois Dodd, Kenneth Koch, Frank O'Hara, Fairfield Porter, Yvonne Rainer, Larry Rivers, and Paul Taylor. Sketches, works on paper, and archival material selected by the artist's son, the poet Vincent Katz, give a fuller picture of the painter and his world. The more than 250 paintings--reproduced at an unprecedented scale--will be the most comprehensive collection available in a single publication.

Alex Katz: White Lotus

Katz, Alex, Roelstraete, Dieter  | Richard Gray Gallery
67,000원  | 20251209  | 9798989158300
Katz's recent suite of large-scale portraits are inspired by the characters from Mike White's blockbuster HBO series GRAY presents Alex Katz's newest body of work: White Lotus, a series of 12 large scale paintings. American artist Alex Katz (born 1927) is one of the most recognized and widely exhibited artists of his generation. Coming of age between Abstract Expressionism and Pop art, Katz began exhibiting his work in 1954, and since that time he has produced a celebrated body of work that includes paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints. His earliest work took inspiration from various aspects of mid-century American culture and society, including television, film and advertising, and over the past five and a half decades he has established himself as a preeminent painter of modern life, whose distinctive portraits and lyrical landscapes bear a flattened surface and consistent economy of line. Alex Katz's White Lotus paintings began in his Maine studio during the summer of 2023. In this series, Katz looks to photography, television and cinema, especially the Italian filmmakers of the 1970's. Each painting portrays a couple in a different fleeting moment, to achieve what Katz describes as "painting in the present tense."

Alex Katz: Flowers

Katz, Alex, Doyle, Oona, Hwang, Kyu Jin  | Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac
38,500원  | 20221018  | 9782910055851
Katz in full bloom: a concise overview of his floral motifs Flowers are a favored subject in the recent paintings of American artist Alex Katz (born 1927). After noticing the dynamism that blooming flowers brought to his group portraits, the artist homed in on the flowers themselves, working in nature to directly capture the light and atmosphere that lend them their bright colors. His carefully executed signature strokes and planes of flat colors are manifest in his flower series, but Katz has also employed a subtler wet-on-wet technique, in which the last stroke of paint is applied before the first one has had time to dry, engendering a sense of immediacy. This volume accompanies the first exhibition of Katz’s flower paintings in Asia, held at Thaddaeus Ropac, Seoul, and features previously unseen works from the artist’s flower series as well as new portraits, whose subjects are depicted in botanical settings.

Alex Katz: Gathering (Gathering 알렉스 카츠)

Katz, Alex  | Guggenheim Museum

The evolution of Alex Katz: nearly 80 years of restless innovation in portraiture and landscape across painting, works on paper and sculpture Across decades of intense creative production, Alex Katz has sought to capture a state of “absolute awareness” in paint. Whether evoking a glancing exchange between friends or a shaft of light filtered through trees, he has aimed to create a record of “quick things passing,” compressing the flux of everyday life into a condensed burst of optical perception. Published on the occasion of the artist’s first US career retrospective in more than 30 years, Alex Katz: Gathering offers a definitive account of Katz’s artistic project, demonstrating both its marked coherence and restless evolution. Generously illustrated, the book features the full breadth of the artist’s work across mediums and formats, from intimate sketches of riders on the New York City subway in the late 1940s to the rapturous, monumentally scaled landscapes that have dominated his recent production. Essays by artists, writers and art historians offer fresh, authoritative overviews of the artist’s practice alongside more focused considerations of specific facets of his art, including his flower paintings, collages, prints, freestanding “cutouts” and set design collaborations with the Paul Taylor Dance Company. A sourcebook of historical reviews, essays and poems rounds out the volume, which offers an overdue reassessment of the artist’s oeuvre.

Alex Katz: Theater & Dance (The Art of Performance)

Katz, Alex, Reinhart, Charles L., Salle, David  | Rizzoli
57,000원  | 20220816  | 9780847871469
Alex Katz's long-standing fascination with dance and collaborations with renowned playwrights and choreographers yielded some of his most complex compositions. Since Alex Katz first painted the Paul Taylor in 1959, he has invited dancers to model for him. Dance, according to the artist, belongs to the same “long tradition of gestures” as painting. This publication is the first to examine the many decades of Katz’s work for the stage, including the ways that he introduced tenets of postwar painting into theater and dance aesthetics. “I’d never seen anything like it,” Katz recalls of his first encounter with the work of dancer and choreographer Paul Taylor. The two partnered on fifteen productions for which Katz innovated with flat lighting, humorous obstacles, and framing mechanisms. His involvement with Paul Taylor led to collaborations with other companies including Yoshiko Chuma, Laura Dean, William Dunas, and Parsons. Among Katz’s most celebrated sets is the ensemble of cutouts he created for Kenneth Koch’s 1961 production, George Washington Crossing the Delaware. Katz heightened the absurdity of the Revolutionary War-inspired play with Pop-adjacent figures and props. This publication brings together paintings, sketches, costumes, photographs, film stills, and ephemera. Newly-commissioned essays, unpublished materials, and major paintings will provide an overview of Katz's working relationships with individual choreographers and shed new light on avant-garde collaborations in New York between the 1960s and 80s.

This volume, published for New York and Maine-based painter Alex Katz's (born 1927) 2016 exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in London, takes landscape as its focus, bringing together Katz's extraordinarily productive output of recent years alongside select works from the past two decades. The book includes texts from artists, thinkers and poets. It opens with a previously unpublished conversation between Alex Katz and Hans Ulrich Obrist and a new poem by John Godfrey. In her essay, Ingrid D. Rowland expands on Katz's unique approach to light; a conversation between artists Marlene Dumas and Jan Andriesse gives an insight into their engagement with Katz's work over time. Critic and writer Jan Verwoert's text explores Katz's understanding of depth and perception, and the artist Merlin James focuses on a single painting. The publication also features archival reviews.
