이 책은 현대 한국 불교의 큰 스승이셨던 대행큰스님이 1998년 11월 1일, 전국 연합 청년법회 때 설하신 법문을 영역하여 한글 원문과 합본으로 출간한 것이다.
앞으로 한국 사회를 짊어지고 나아갈 청년들이 스님의 법문을 듣기 위해 전국에서 모여들었다. 스님은 청년들이 과감하고 늠름하게 자신들의 삶을 이끌어 갈 수 있도록 마음공부의 핵심을 이렇게 일러주신다. “어떠한 일이 닥쳐온다 하더라도 눈 하나 깜짝 하지 않고 그냥 자기 근본, 주인공을 믿고 거기다 놓고 갈 수 있다면 그게 최고”라고. 스님의 가르침은 일견 매우 간결한 설명처럼 들리지만, 살면서 어떤 일이 다가오든 마음의 흔들림 없이 일체를 주인공에 일임할 수 있게 되기까지에는 대단한 마음의 힘이 요구될 터이다.
여기에 대행큰스님은 ‘어찌해서 우리는 자신의 근본을 완전히 믿을 수밖에 없는가 ’라는 질문을 던지며, 모든 일체 만물에 불성이 있다는 사실을 상기시킨다. 근본자리를 통해 만물만생이 하나로 연결되어 있으며, 그 자리를 믿고 일체를 거기에 놓고 가면, 꽃도 나무도 죽은 이들의 영혼까지도, 모두가 한마음으로 응신으로 화해 도움을 주게 되는 원리를 새삼 밝혀 주신 것이다.
우리들 근본마음의 작용은 묘하고도 깊은 뜻이 있으니, 믿고, 놓고, 관觀하여 모든 게 한마음으로 돌아가게 하는 과정을 반복하라. 그렇게 하면서 가다 보면 마음속에서 자기 근본, 참나인 주인공과 대화가 되고 그게 나를 가르쳐 주는 스승이 된다. 더 나아가서는 다른 사람을 도와줄 수도 있게 되니, 실로 마음 공부의 위대함은 말로 다 형용할 수 없다.
스님은 진주지원 영탑공원으로 가는 길을 만들어 준 여러 청년들의 정성스러운 마음을 기특하다 칭찬하시며, 열심히 마음 공부하는 청년들의 앞길이 트일 것이라고 마음을 내주시며 설법을 마치고 있다.

This is a Dharma talk given by Korean Seon Master Daehaeng on November 1, 1998 to the National Youth Group of Hanmaum Seon Center. They had gathered to share their experiences, and to greet Seon Master Daehaeng and receive her Dharma teachings.
Before taking individual questions, she started by emphasizing the omnipresent and all-embracing nature of what she calls “Buddha-nature” or “our fundamental mind.” Due to its all-embracing nature, if we can entrust it with whatever we are facing, both good and bad, then this will produce the best results.
However, while this is a very straightforward statement, it usually takes considerable experience to develop the faith to do this without blinking. So Seon Master Daehaeng emphasizes starting with the so-called small things, both pleasant and unpleasant that we are encountering in our daily life. For this daily life itself is an expression of the whole. Nothing we see, do, or experience exists apart from this, including what is called “fundamental mind,” “true nature,” or “Buddha-nature.” Thus, Seon Master Daehaeng says, the underlying aspect of our reality is that all beings are inherently sharing the same life, the same body, the same mind, working together as one, and freely giving and receiving whatever is needed. It is ignorance of this, and actions lacking this awareness, that lead to suffering.
Thus, Seon Master Daehaeng emphasizes, the path of spiritual growth begins, and ends, with trusting this indivisible whole that we are part of. By repeatedly trying to let go and entrust it with what we are experiencing, we will grow in understanding, faith, and spiritual depth.
Seon Master Daehaeng concludes by thanking the Youth Group for the work they have done, and discusses the nature of what she describes as “virtue and merit.”
