Nooteboom의 지도로 박사학위를 취득했으며 동 대학에서 슬라브어와 일반언어학을 연구했다. 그는 1987년도에 동 대학 전산언어학과의 조교수로 임명되었다. 1990년도에 그와 그의 아내 Esther는 SIL기구에 합류했다. 1994년~2004년에 그들 부부는 파키스탄에서 SIL기구와 함께 봉사했으며 그 기간 동안 저자는 파키스탄 지역의 잘 알려지 않은 언어들에 대한 언어학적 현장 연구를 수행했다. 저자는 현재 SIL기구 내의 서부 유라시아 그룹의 학술 최고책임자이며 SIL기구의 국제 언어학 자문위원이다.
