이 책은 1938년에 출판된 보아스의 「원시인의 사고와 감정」 수정 증보판을 번역한 것이다. 미국 인류학의 아버지로 알려진 보아스는 이 책에서 유럽과 미국의 19세기 진화 이론 및 인류학 연구가 과학적 근거도 없이 백인 중심적으로 전개되었음을 보여주었으며, 인종 개념 및 인종의 구분 자체가 과학적으로 정당화될 수 없음을 주장하였다. 또 당시까지의 연구를 바탕으로 발달하고 있었던 우생학이 범하고 있는 오류들을 나열하면서, 우생학의 논리가 과학적이지 못할 뿐만 아니라 지극히 정치적이라는 점을 지적하였다. 보아스는 이민 집단의 세대별 두개골 모양에 대한 연구를 통해, 체질적 유형도 환경에 따라 매우 큰 가소성(plasticity)을 보인다고 주장하였다. 이미 한 세기 전에 인종 개념이 생물학적 근거가 없다고 강조했던 보아스의 주장은 여전히 유효하다. 그러나 한 세기가 지나면서 유전자 구조의 발견과 함께 연관된 생물학적 지식은 비교할 수 없을 정도로 늘어났다. 법의인류학(forensic anthropology)에서는 치아나 뼈의 특성으로 인종을 분류하기도 하고, 의학에서는 인종 혹은 종족 집단에 따라 특정 질병의 발병률이 차이가 나는 이유에 대한 유전적인 설명을 제공하기도 한다. 이러한 측면에서는 보아스가 이 책에서 내세우는 모든 주장을 현재 우리가 살고 있는 시대에 그대로 적용할 수는 없다. 그러나, 어떤 질병이라도 유전적 요인 외에도 여전히 환경적 요인에 대한 규명이 필요하다는 점, 유전자형이 표현되는 과정에서 환경이 일정 정도 작용하는 방식을 연구하는 후성유전학(epigenetics)의 중요성이 이제야 대두되고 있다는 점에서 시대를 앞서 나간 보아스의 통찰력은 여전히 돋보인다. 보아스의 기여는 인류학이라는 학문 분야에 국한되지 않는다. 보아스가 살던 시기에는 진화와 사회이론이 여러 분야에서 다루어지던 주제였다. 제한된 증거만을 가지고 상상을 덧붙인 온갖 가설이 다양한 분야에 난무하던 19세기 진화 이론의 영역에서, 상상과 추정을 배제하고 검증 과정의 과학성을 확립한 것이 보아스의 가장 큰 기여일 것이다. 보아스에게는 이 작업이 학문적인 목표인 동시에, 유사과학인 우생학의 정치화와 정책화를 우려하는 지식인으로서 사회에 기여하는 바이기도 했을 것이다. 19세기 말의 독일 사회에서 반유태인 분위기를 경험했던 보아스는 미국에서 1910년대에 우생학에 근거한 강제 불임 정책이 시행되는 상황을 지켜보아야 했다. 1920년대에서 1930년대까지 미국의 록펠러재단이 지속적으로 독일의 우생학 연구를 지원했음을 감안한다면, 나치당이 인종주의 정책을 기조로 권력을 잡고 별다른 갈등 없이 오스트리아까지 합병한 해인 1938년을 경험해야 했던 보아스의 답답함은 충분히 헤아릴 수 있을 것이다. 한 세기가 지난 지금도 세계 곳곳에는 인종적인 편견과 사고가 강하게 남아 있으며, 신종 코로나 바이러스 전염 상황에서 인종주의적 시각과 태도가 일상적으로 아시아계 혹은 아프리카계 사람들을 향해 표출되고 있다. 하지만 인종주의는 다른 나라만의 문제가 아니다. “우월한 유전자”와 같은 표현이 아무렇지 않게 통용되는 사회에서는 유전에 대한 정확한 지식과 함께 인종주의가 가져오는 사회적 효과에 대한 보아스의 비판적인 시각이 더욱 절실하게 필요하다. 이 책의 번역이 우리 사회에서 이미 많이 높아진 상식의 품격을 한층 더 높이는 계기가 되었으면 한다.
