With each new edition, our first effort is to develop a few new laboratory experiments for the dc and ac sections to offer a broader range of selection. In keeping with this, through the efforts of Professor Franz J. Monssen, we have added two de and two ac experiments. The first of the new dc experiments, Power Ratings of Resistors, teaches students that just because a circuit works "on paper," it may not be a physically realizable circuit. Besides the determination of voltages across and currents through resistors, their power ratings must not be exceeded to ensure the proper and safe operation of a physical circuit. The second new dc experiment, R-C Circuits, Transient Response, investigates the transient response of R-C circuits. That response is fundamentally important in ascertaining the time it takes for an R-C circuit to change energy states and is an important parameter of circuit performance. Students are encouraged to obtain the transient response and the time constant of a charging circuit using the PSpice program and compare its results with the experimental data obtained. The first of the new ac experiments, Superposition Theorem (ac), attempts to verify its applicability to a circuit containing an ac and a dc source. The circuit used in our investigation is much like many transistor circuits that use a dc source for biasing power and an ac source that provides the signal in the circuit. In addition, this two-source circuit demonstrates that the power flow in it conforms to the Superposition theorem. The second new ac experiment, Investigating the Responses of a Cross-over Network, is a circuit that has practical applicability beyond the laboratory. Cross-over networks are found in audio systems. Students will investigate the response of this system over the entire audio range. Specifically, three passive filter networks are used, each of them maximizes its response over a certain portion of the audio frequency spectrum. A PSpice AC Sweep analysis ranging from 0 Hz to 100 kHz using its PROBE plot will yicld valuable insight into the behavior of this system.
