내가 책을 쓸 때 항상 지키고자 하는 간단한 목표가 있다. 즉, 인체의 해부 및 기능과 관련된 복잡한 내용을 ‘쉽게’ 풀어내자는 것이다. 이 책은 물리치료에 종사하는 치료사들을 염두에 두고 쓰인 것이지 신경외과 의사나 신경과 의사를 대상으로 쓴 것은 아니다. 그러나 설명이 상세하고 컬러풀한 현대식 그림을 수록하고 있기 때문에 의사들도 분명 이 책을 흥미롭게 읽을 것이다. 이 책에서의 내 계획은 말초신경계(peripheral nervous system, PNS)에 주로 집중하는 것이다. 말초신경계는 치료사가 특수 검진법과 반사 해머, 소리굽쇠 같은 특정 도구를 통해 평가하고 이해할 수 있는 매혹적인 분야이다. 그러나 이 중 뇌신경에 대해서는 (간단히 언급하고 표로 제시하긴 하겠지만) 자세히 다루지는 않을 것이다. 신경학적 해부, 그중에서도 특히 중추신경계(central nervous system, CNS)에 대해서도 시간을 많이 할애하진 않을 것이다. 신경계의 해부와 생리에 대해서 꽤 많은 내용을 포함시키긴 했지만 내 주된 관심사는 말초신경계이다. 왜냐하면 인체의 각 시스템이 어떻게 작동하는지에 대한 기초에 초점을 맞추고 싶었기 때문이다. 여러분이 이 책을 즐기기를, (두 손 모아) 진심으로 바란다. 2020년, 존 기븐스
