선박 운항에 필요한 무선통신 이론과 실무를 중심으로 구성된 교재이다. 선박 항행의 주요 요소 중 하나는 원활한 통신기능이다. 특히, 국제항행에 종사하는 상선은 매일 정해진 시간에 상선의 위치와 주요 업무 등을 회사에 보고해야 한다. 또한 부상자나 긴급 환자가 발생하는 경우 속히 육상 의료진과의 통화가 필요하다. 아울러, 선박이 조난당하거나 좌초, 충돌 등이 발생하는 경우, 여하한의 통신 수단과 방법을 이용하여 관계기관에 통보하여 지원체계를 구축해야하며, 선박과 선박 사이의 안전운항을 위해서도 통신은 반드시 필요하다. 과거에는 통신기술이 발달하지 못하여 선박이 부두를 출항하면 정해진 시간에만 통신사가 모스(morse) 통신으로 교신하는 관계로 정확한 정보나 방대한 정보를 속히 송수신할 수 없었다. 최근에는 위성 통신의 발달로 육상과의 통신이 수시 가능하고, 심지어 인터넷도 가능한 시대가 왔다. 한편, 통신사 제도가 사라짐과 동시에 GMDSS라는 장비가 강제화 되면서 통신운용에 관한 모든 업무는 항해사가 담당하게 되었고, 이에 IMO에서는 관계법령을 개정하여 항해사들이 GOC 면허증을 취득하도록 강제화 되었다. 따라서 최근의 항해사들은 GOS 면허의 취득은 물론 GMDSS를 포함하는 선내 각종 통신장비를 운용하고 유지 보수할 수 있는 능력이 요구되고 있다. 그러나 방대한 관련 이론을 단기간에 학습하기는 어렵다. 본 교재에서는 1개 학기 정도의 분량으로, 항해사들이 반드시 알아야할 기본적인 무선통신 이론과 실무를 중심으로 구성하였다.
