이 책은 12현 가야금을 학습하기 이전에 먼저 25현 가야금을 학습하는 것을 추천하고 있다. 현재 음악교육 현장에서 사용하는 일반적인 교육 방법을 도입하면 보편적인 접근이 가능하고 이에 따라 후에 12현 가야금을 학습할 때 혼란 없이 명확함을 주고자 함이다. 오선보를 읽을 수 있으면 오선보를 보고 연주하고, 오선보를 읽는 것이 힘들면 숫자보의 숫자를 읽으며 연주가 가능하다. 1-7까지의 숫자를 읽을 수 있으면 이 책에 수록되어있는 곡을 연주할 수 있다. 이 원고의 일부를 사용하여 발달장애 학생 3명(3명의 학생 모두 오선보를 읽을 수 없었다.)을 1년간 가르쳤고 25현 가야금을 연주할 수 있게 하였다. 이 책은 3부분으로 구성되어 있다. 1장은 가야금을 가르치는 선생님께 드리는 말로 기존 25현 가야금 교육에 혼란이 되어 왔던 점과 이 책에서 제시하는 기보법과 줄 표기법을 설명하였다. 2~5장은 다장조(C)에서 시작하여 조표가 순차적으로 늘어감에 따라 달라지는 조율법 및 가야금 기초 주법들을 설명하고 연습하도록 하였다. 기존의 교본은 초보자에게도 내림마장조(E♭)와 내림가장조(A♭)의 조표로 연주하도록 하였는데 그와는 철저히 다른 접근이다. 그리고 마지막 6장은 연주곡들을 수록하였다. 이 책의 특징은 학생들을 가르치는 선생님께 드리는 강의 포인트와 학생들이 꼭 알아야할 학습 포인트를 각 장마다 짧게 설명하였다. 일반 학교 학생, 또한 특수학교 학생, 그리고 가야금을 25현 가야금으로 처음 배워서 시작하고자 하는 분들에게 ‘쉬운 지침서’가 되도록 나름대로 노력하였다.
