기존 해방전후사에서 별로 언급하지 않았던 소련군 점령기의 북한을 비교적 자세히 다루고 있다. 대개 광복 직후의 북한은 남한에 비해 자주적인 성격을 지닌 정권이라 하지만, 실제로 이와 다르다는 점을 지적하였다. 소련은 점령군 사령부 안에 ‘민 정부’를 설치하고 북조선임시인민위원회를 원조하였지만, 실제로는 위장일뿐 배후에서 지령을 내리고 있었다. 오히려 미군정보다 더 교활한 방식으로 효율적으로 점령지를 통제하고 김일성을 조정하였다. 이 책에서 말하고자 하는 것은 해방 이후 한국전쟁 전까지 우리나라는 미?소에 의한 분단과 군정 등의 어려움을 겪었는데, 이러한 일련의 사건을 일방적인 ‘성공’으로 보는 것도, 단칼에 ‘실패’로 규정하는 것도 적절하지 않다는 것이다. 왜냐하면 실제 역사는 그 중간에서 진행돼 왔기 때문이다. 분단을 겪은 나라들의 사례를 정리한 분단 유형론과 그 변화 과정을 살펴볼 때 우리나라는 국제적 성격과 내쟁적 성격이 가미된 복합형의 성격을 띠고 있기 때문이다.
