Throughout history, the military and the media have shared a somewhat strained relationship, and during the Vietnam War, that relationship was showcased daily via television broadcasts across the United States. It was the first time military leaders had to deal with intense media scrutiny. Therefore, the military blamed the media for many of the problems during Vietnam, and that negative sentiment carried over into conflicts in Grenada, Panama, and the first Gulf War.

Breaking Through the Noise: Presidential Leadership, Public Opinion, and the News Media (Presidential Leadership, Public Opinion, and the News Media)

Eshbaugh-Soha, Matthew, Peake, Jeffrey  | Stanford University Press
41,040원  | 20110914  | 9780804777063
Matthew Eshbaugh-Soha is Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of North Texas. He is the author ofThe President's Speeches: Beyond "Going Public"(2006). Jeffrey S. Peake is Professor and Chair of the Department of Political Science at Clemson University. With Glen Krutz, he is coauthor ofTreaty Politics and the Rise of Executive Agreements(2009). Modern presidents engage in public leadership through national television addresses, routine speechmaking, and by speaking to local audiences. With these strategies, presidents tend to influence the media's agenda. In fact, presidential leadership of the news media provides an important avenue for indirect presidential leadership of the public, the president's ultimate target audience. Although frequently left out of sophisticated treatments of the public presidency, the media are directly incorporated into this book's theoretical approach and analysis. The authors find that when the public expresses real concern about an issue, such as high unemployment, the president tends to be responsive. But when the president gives attention to an issue in which the public does not have a preexisting interest, he can expect, through the news media, to directly influence public opinion. Eshbaugh-Soha and Peake offer key insights on when presidents are likely to have their greatest leadership successes and demonstrate that presidents can indeed "break through the noise" of news coverage to lead the public agenda. " Breaking Through the Noiseexpertly expands the debate about presidential leadership and responsiveness in a sophisticated way. Taking a critical next step in the study of the president's relationship with the public, this important book provides insight into the increasingly central, but not well understood, role the media play in the White House's connection with the public."--Brandon Rottinghaus, University of Houston " Breaking through the Noiseis among the best recent scholarship on presidential leadership of and responsiveness to the American public and mass media. Eshbaugh-Soha and Peake rigorously develop their arguments both theoretically and empirically. As a result, this study will be important reading for future scholars of the presidency and democratic responsiveness."--B. Dan Wood, author of The Myth of Presidential Representation "The president's impact on the media is one of the great questions of presidential leadership. In Breaking Through the Noise, Matthew Eshbaugh-Soha and Jeffrey Peake make an important contribution to answering it by showing how the White House influences the media's--and ultimately the public's--policy agenda."--George C. Edwards III, Texas A&M University This book explores how presidential leadership of the public most typically occurs through leadership of the news media.

From News to Talk: The Expansion of Opinion and Commentary in Us Journalism (The Expansion of Opinion and Commentary in Us Journalism)

Meltzer, Kimberly  | State University of New York Press

From News to Talk examines what journalists think about the movement toward often opinionated, sometimes uncivil, talk in news. Framing Inequality: News Media, Public Opinion, and the Neoliberal Turn in U.S. Public Policy (News Media, Public Opinion, and the Neoliberal Turn in U.s. Public Policy)

Guardino, Matt  | Oxford University Press, USA
80,410원  | 20190301  | 9780190888190
This book argues that political-economic features of the U.S. commercial media system have generated news coverage that favors neoliberal viewpoints during pivotal domestic policy debates since the early 1980s. It also demonstrates that this coverage can shape public opinion to support policies that exacerbate economic and political inequality.

Editorial and Opinion: The Dwindling Marketplace of Ideas in Today’s News (The Dwindling Marketplace of Ideas in Today’s News)

Hallock, Steven M./ Downing, John (FRW)  | Greenwood
104,560원  | 20061130  | 9780275993306
In 1930 there were 288 competitive major newspaper markets in the United States. Today, there are fewer than 30. The diminishing diversity of opinion and voices in newspapers editorials is taking place even as technological advances seemingly provide more sources of (the same) information. As Hallock shows, the concentration of media ownership in fewer and fewer hands allows those individuals and entities an inordinate amount of influence. In this intriguing book, he examines 18 newspaper markets to show us exactly how and where this troubling trend is occurring, what it means for the political landscape, and, ultimately, how it can affect us all.
