Composed over a six month period (October 1906 to April 1907), Rachmaninoff's second excursion into symphonic form was written at a time when he was still not entirely confident in his abilities to handle the genre. Unhappy with the first draft, the work was subjected to much revision for several months after its completion. The premiere, given on January 26, 1908 in St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre with the composer conducting, received tumultuous applause from the delighted audience.

Composed in 1858, Brahms' first concerto was given its premiere in Hanover's Royal Theater on January 22, 1859 with the 25-year-old composer as soloist and the orchestra was conducted by Joseph Joachim. The new work got a cold reception in Hanover and a similar reaction was the response to the Leipzg performance 5 days later with the far more professional Gewandhaus orchestra. The premiere was given in Venice's Teatro La Fenice on March 17, 1846 in the tense period when northern Italy grew increasingly resistant to Austrian rule. Chadwick's "Symphonic Ballad" is based upon Robert Burns' poem of the same title. Composed in 1915 at a time when the US was on the brink of World War I, the work was viewed as an affirmation of America's Anglo-Celtic heritage. The present score is a carefully restored reissue of the first edition issued by the Boston Music Co in 1917. Commissioned by the eminent violinist Joseph Joachim after a Berlin meeting in April of 1879, Dvorak composed his first version between July 5 and September of the same year, even incorporating changes recommended by Joachim, sending the score to the violinist in November with a formal dedication. Joachim's opinion must not have been favorable as Dvorak set about revising the work in April and May of 1880 following a visit to Berlin, at which point the score was again sent to Berlin.

Composed in the late summer of 1876, Dvorak's first effort at a full-blown concerto shows signs of an unusual amount of revision in the composer's hand - especially for the solo piano part. This might explain the delay in the concerto's premiere, which was given at the Provisional Theatre in Prague on March 24, 1878 with Karel Slavkovsky as soloist accompanied by the Provisional Theatre Orchestra under the baton of Adolf Cech.

Debussy composed his concertante masterwork on commission from Pleyel for a competition held at the Brussels conservatoire featuring a newly improved "harpe chromatique" and string orchestra. The work was given its first performance at the Concerts Colonne in Paris on November 6, 1904 with Madame Wurmser-Delcourt as soloist with the orchestra directed by Edouard Colonne. The piece gained popularity fast and soon entered standard repertoire for works featuring a harp and orchestra.
