본 글은 필자의 2020년 8월 기독교교육학 박사학위 논문을 기초로 이를 축약 보완한 것이다. 본래 학위 논문의 주제는 “한국 장로교 신학교 및 신학계 기독교대학교의 신학적 정체성과 기독교종교교육 유형에 관한 연구”였는데, 이 글에서는 그 중에 전반부에 해당하는 평양장로교신학교로부터 해방 후 네 개 장로교회 신학교들로 이어지는 1960년까지 시기에 있어서 이들 신학교들의 정체성 형성 배경과 발전에 초점을 맞추었다. 한국의 장로교에는 여러 교파들이 있지만, 대표적으로 대한예수교장로회와 한국기독교장로회(기장)가 있고, 대한예수교장로회 내에는 고신, 장신(통합), 총신(합동) 교단이 있다. 이들은 모두 하나의 장로교에서 분열되어 나왔다. 이들 교파들은 본래 하나의 교단이었고, 그 원류는 평양장로회 신학교였다. 이런 점에서 이들 학교들은 한국 장로교의 첫 신학교였던 평양 장로회 신학교와 어떠한 관계가 있는지, 그리고 어떤 경위로 이들 학교들이 설립 발전되었는지를 추적하고자 하였다.

현재 우리나라의 몇몇 기독교대학에는 ‘기독교교육과’가 있다. 기독교교육과는 고등학교 선택과목 중 하나인 ‘종교교사’를 양성하는 사범대학이다. 종교교사를 양성하는 사범대학은 기독교대학 뿐 아니라 다른 종교계 대학에도 개설되어 있는데 과 명칭이 조금 다르다. 그러나 많은 경우 기독교교육과는 기독교인을 대상으로 기독교적인 장소에서 행해지는 교육이라는 인식이 아직도 있는듯하다. 교육의 핵심적인 장소가 학교 뿐 아니라 가정과 교회인 것을 감안한다면 교회나 기독교가정에서의 교육도 예외일 수는 없지만 그것을 위한 학문은 아니다. 본 저서는 이러한 오해를 풀고, 기독교교육에 입문하는 학생들 혹은 기독교교육이 무엇인지 알고자 하는 사람들을 대상으로 아주 기초적이지만 핵심적인 내용들을 정리한 글이다. 어쩌면 기독교교육학개론의 개론이라 할 수도 있겠다.

종교와 인생 과목개요 (교과서: 종교학 인생의 길을 묻다) 종교와 인생은 삶의 시작과 끝에 대해 고찰함으로써, 인생의 진정한 의미를 생각하게 하고 이를 통해 바람직한 인생설계와 방향을 설정할 수 있는 능력을 기르기 위해 개설된 과목이다. 종교와 인생 과목은 인간에 대한 존중과 신의 형상으로서의 인간에게 내재된 신성을 인정하며, 이를 통해 인간의 가치를 고유한 개별적 가치로 존중함을 통해 바른 인간관과 세계관을 통한 인생관을 확립하게 하는 민주 시민의 역량을 추구한다. 종교와 인생 과목에서는 이를 위해 인간의 기원에 대한 각 종교별 신화를 탐구하고 각 종교에서 나타나는 인간에 대한 관점을 비교할 수 있도록 한다. 이를 통하여 개인의 자아정체감을 확립하도록 돕고 걸어온 과거와 서있는 현재의 자리를 분명히 알게 함으로써 나아갈 미래를 설계하도록 돕는다. 종교와 인생 과목의 학습자는 다양한 형태의 인생관과 세계관을 비교해보고, 이를 자신의 삶에 적용시키는데 있어서 균형잡힌 시각을 갖게 된다. 특히, 한국 근현대사에서 미션스쿨의 역사와 가치관 그리고 역할을 통해 가치관 확립과 인간에 대한 존엄성, 그리고 인생의 의미를 발견하는 교육에 있어서 종교의 기여한 바에 대해 살펴보고, 이를 통해 개인과 공동체의 조화로운 삶에 기여할 수 있도록 협동, 호혜, 이타주의, 공정성 등의 가치를 실천해가는 태도를 함양할 수 있다. 종교와 인생 과목에서 학습자는 행복, 성공에 대한 개념을 재정립해보고 물질만능주의와 이기주의가 만연한 사회 풍조에서 인간을 인간답게 보는 눈과 공동체성을 재고하여, 사회 속에서 공동체 문제에 관심을 가지고 이를 해결해가는 과정에서 의사소통 능력, 협업능력, 집단적 문제 해결력을 기른다. 종교와 인생 과목은 고등학교에서 선택과목 등 단일과목으로 개설할 수 있다. 또한 다른 교과목에서 융합수업 방식으로 활용할 수 있으며, 창의적 체험활동, 방과후 학교 등 다양한 비교과 교육과정을 통해서도 활용할 수 있도록 체험 위주의 체계를 갖추고 있다. 이러한 체험과정은 2015 개정 교육과정이 추구하는 학생활동중심 수업을 강화하는 취지를 담고 있다. 체험 과정을 통해 학생들이 스스로 문제 상황을 찾아 그에 따른 창의적 해결책을 제시하는 과정에서 성취감을 느끼도록 편성하였다.
