이미 2005년 5월 타계했지만, 20세기 조경 분야와 환경계획 분야에서 가장 중요한 인물 중 한 사람이었다. 그의 비전으로 가득 찬 사고(思考), 혁신 정신은 세계 널리 잘 알려져 있다. 70년 넘는 조경 일생 역정을 통해 미국에서 조경이라는 분야가 소수 전문가가 활동하던 1900년대 초부터, 오늘날 30,000명 넘는 토지이용계획 전문가, 환경계획 전문가까지 활동하는 시대가 되도록 확대, 발전시키는 다리 역할을 담당해 왔다. 《조경학》책은 물론, 여타 허다한 기여를 통해 오늘날 친환경적 계획과 설계에 초점을 맞추도록 이끄는 초석을 다졌다. 미국조경가협회(ASLA) 회장을 역임하였고, 원로회원이었으며, 미국조경가협회는 최고 영예로운 상 ‘협회 메달(ASLA Medal)’과, 이제까지 유일하게 수여한 ‘100주년 기념 협회장 메달(Centennial President’s Medal)’을 수여한 바 있다. 미국대통령 환경특별위원회(President’s Task Force on the Environment) 위원, 플로리다 주지사 자연자원특별위원회(Florida Governor’s Task Force on Natural Resources) 위원, 영국 왕립디자인학술원 원로회원(Fellow of the Royal Academy of Design in Great Britain)을 역임했다.
