스탠퍼드대학교 인구학 명예 교수이자 보전생물학센터 학장이다. 미국국립과학원 회원이며 스웨덴왕립과학원에서 크라포르드 상(노벨상이 수여되지 않는 분야에서 노벨상을 대체하는 상), 푸른지구상을 비롯해 많은 국제적인 상을 받았다. 그는 집단 생물학, 생태학, 진화학, 인간 생태학, 환경 과학 등 다양한 분야의 주제를 연구하고 있다. 현재 그는 인간 문화 진화의 메커니즘을 연구하고 있으며 그 인간 문화 진화를 통해 오늘날 인류가 직면하고 있는 이른바 ‘인간의 곤경’이라는 환경 문제를 개선하는 방법을 찾는 일에 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다.
