(1944~2006) 미국법사의 대표적인 학자이며, 특히 헌법과 사법제도의 역사에 관한 전문가였다. 알바니-뉴욕주립대학 총장으로 재직중 불의의 사고로 사망했다. 대표적인 저서로는 《The Magic Mirror : Law in American History》 (2nd ed., 2008), 《The Judicial Branch》 (2005), 《The Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court of the United States》(2nd ed., rev., 2005), 《The Oxford Companion to American Law》(2003) 등 30여 권이 있다.
