미국 일리노이주 섐페인 출생. 역사가, 전 브라운대학교 교수, C. L. R. 제임스의 공인 전기 작가이다. 1966년 일리노이 대학생 시절 <민주사회를 위한 학생들>(SDS)의 반전운동 활동의 대변인이었다. 2006~07년 결성된 새로운 SDS의 창립 인사 중 한 명이었고, SDS의 비공식 기관지였던 『래디컬 아메리카』(1967~99)를 창간한 편집자였다. 『레드 로자』(산처럼, 2016)를 비롯하여 수십 권의 논픽션 그래픽 노블을 엮었다.
