예일대학교 사학과 교수 및 하버드대학교 사학과 교수를 역임하였고, 현재 하버드대학교 사학과 명예교수이다. 사회사적 접근과 분석을 통해 종교개혁은 물론 종교개혁기의 사회와 문화에 관한 탁월한 학문적 성과를 이룩한 세계적인 석학이다.
