Johns Hopkins 대학교 간호대학을 졸업하고 동 대학원에서 보건학 석·박사학위를 받았으며, Johns Hopkins 병원에서 소아과 간호사와 아동 전문간호사로 근무하였다. 박사학위 취득 후 Pennsylvania Commonwealth 보건부에서 아동건강 과장, Texas 대학교에서 아동간호학 교수로 재직하는 등 아동간호의 발전에 관심을 갖고 일하였다. 지난 20년간 Washington의 국립아동의료원에서 근무하면서 아동 응급의료시스템 구축에 노력을 기울였다. 그녀는 American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma의 컨설턴트로일하면서, 주의 외상 치료 시스템을 개선하는 데 도움을 주고 있으며, Wake Forest UniversitySchool of Medicine의 어린이 응급의 료 서비스 프로그램 어워드 선정위원이고, Uniformed Services University of the Health Science의 아동 응급 교육 프로그램 개발을 위한 컨설턴트이다. 동시에 그녀는 여러 아동간호학 저서의 집필자이다. 2010년에는 Johns Hopkins 대학의 영광의 동문상을 수상하였다.
