런던대학교 버크벡대학의 경제지리학 교수다. 세계화, 초국가기업, 도시정책, 비평적인 사회이론 등에 관심을 갖고 연구를 한다. 특히 그는 세계화 논의를 이론적으로 재정립하는 작업에 관심이 많다. 세계화는 얼굴을 바꾼 채 여전히 세계 곳곳에서 진행 중이며, 세계화 논쟁 역시 끝나지 않았다고 보기 때문이다. 세계화 논의를 비판적으로 보면서, 세계화의 주요 개념들과 이론가들의 강점과 약점을 분류한 《세계화 사전Dictionary of Globalization》을 출간하기도 했다.
