영국 출신의 생식의학자. 현재 UC 버클리의 가족계획학부 교수로 있다. 1968년 국제가족계획연맹의 초대 의학부장으로 일했으며, 1972년 방글라데시 독립전쟁에서 국제 의료팀을 이끈 이래로 베트남, 캄보디아, 이집트, 아프가니스탄, 가자 지구 등의 분쟁 지역에서 활발히 활동을 해왔다. 현재 세계은행과 영국, 미국, 캐나다, 이집트 정부의 자문위원으로 있다. 수백 권의 논문을 발표했으며 지은 책으로는 『빅토리아 여왕의 유전자Queen Victoria’s Gene』『아담과 이브 이후로: 인간 섹슈얼리티의 진화Ever Since Adam and Eve: The Evolution of Human Sexuality 』 등이 있다.
