킹스칼리지런던 영화학과와 세인트앤드루스대학 영화학과 명예교수다. 주로 영화를 비롯한 대중문화를 통해 재현과 정체성의 문제를 다루어 왔다. 《스타Stars》(1979)와 《천상의 몸Heavenly Bodies》(1986)은 스타 연구와 셀러브리티 연구의 고전으로 꼽히며, 《화이트》(1997)는 인종과 백인성, 재현 문제를 다룬 기념비적 저작이다. 《나우 유 시 잇Now You See It》(1990)과 《이미지라는 것The Matter of Images》(1993)은 미디어 속 퀴어의 재현 문제에 대한 통찰력을 제공한다. 그 외에도 《퀴어 문화The Culture of Queer》(2001), 《패스티시Pastiche》(2007), 《영화 속 노래In the Space of a Song》(2011) 등을 통해 대중문화 속 인종, 젠더, 섹슈얼리티에 대한 사유를 펼쳤으며 영화 비평을 하기도 했다. 자신의 개인적 삶과 정체성을 학문적 연구를 통해 녹여냄으로써 날카로운 통찰력과 이론적 개념들을 제시할 뿐만 아니라 이를 다시 정치적인 목소리와 운동의 힘으로 바꾸어 내는 활동을 해 왔다.
