이 책의 주 저자 매튜 카르모나는 영국 공인 건축가이자 도시계획가로서 런던대학교 바틀렛 계획학부의 교수이다. 디자인 거버넌스 프로세스, 공공 공간의 설계 및 관리, 디자인의 가치에 중점을 두고 교육과 연구활동을 이어가고 있다. 그는 장소의 품질을 위한 부문 간 협력 연합인 Place Alliance의 의장이며, 최근에는 영국 하원 건축환경선정위원회의 전문 고문으로 활동하였다. 2015년에는 RTPI 학술상 연구우수상을, 2016년에는 RTPI 피터 홀 경의 폭넓은 참여를 위한 상을 수상하였다. 2018년에는 유럽계획학회(AESOP) 최우수 출판논문상을 수상했다. 대표 저작으로는Public Places Urban Spaces: The Dimensions of Urban Design(2003), Public Space: The Management Dimension(2008), Capital Spaces: The Multiple Complex Public Spaces of a Global City(2013) 등이 있다.
