30년 넘게 영화 업계에 종사하며 촬영 감독, 감독, 시나리오 작가, 프로듀서, 편집자로 일했다. 촬영 감독이자 영화감독이 되기 전에는 조명 부원, 개퍼, 그립으로 경험을 쌓았다. 브라운은 장편 영화, 광고, 뮤직비디오, 기업 비디오를 촬영했고, 연출, 감독 등을 역임했다. 컬럼비아 칼리지, UCLA, 로스앤젤레스 영화학교, AFI 등 로스앤젤레스 지역의 여러 영화 학교에서 강의했다. 그는 MIT와 하버드 디자인대학원에서 건축과 도시 계획을 공부했다. 저서로는 『영화 제작 기초: 시나리오 작성, 제작, 연출, 촬영, 오디오, 그리고 편집』, 『영화 조명 핸드북』(4판), 『디지털 영화를 위한 안내서』 등이 있다.
