에든버러대학교에서 박사학위를 받았다. 이탈리아와 독일의 대학에서 강의했으며, 인도에서 1년간 연구년을 보냈고, 터키에서 6년 동안 살면서 이스탄불의 여러 대학에서 강의했다. 현재는 애틀랜타 주 조지아주립대학교 교수로 포스트식민주의 문학과 이론을 가르치고 있다. 저서로는 Sufism and Deconstruction(2004), New Orientalists: Postmodern Representations of Islam(2007), History of Islam in German Thought From Leibniz to Nietzsche(2009) 등이 있다.
