다양한 지역의 공학학에 관심 있는 세심한 과학기술학자이자 민족지학자다. 리하이 대학교에서 기계공학을 전공하고 시카고 대학교에서 문화인류학으로 박사 학위를 받았다. 공학학 국제 네트워크(INES)의 공동 창립자이며, 대학에서 공학 문화 과목을 처음 개설했다. 2013년에서 2015년까지 과학의 사회적 연구학회(Society for Social Studies of Science) 회장을 지내기도 했다. 현재 버지니아 공과대학 과학기술학과 석학교수로 있으며, 여성학과 젠더학 겸임교수도 맡고 있다.《내 안의 기계(The Machine in Me)》를 썼으며, 다수의 책을 공동 집필하고 공동 편집했다. http://www.downey.sts.vt.edu/
