아프리카계 미국인 철학자이다. 그가 관심을 두고 연구하는 분야는 아프리카 철학, 인간과학 철학, 현상학, 실존주의, 사회 및 정치 이론, 포스트식민 이론, 인종과 인종주의 이론 등이다. 그의 대표적 저서는 <거짓 신념과 반(反)흑인적 인종주의Bad Faith and Antiblack Racism>(1995), <아프리카인의 실존: 아프리카 실존 사상의 이해Existentia Africana: Understanding Africana Existential Thought>(2000), <아프리카 철학 입문An Introduction to Africana Philosophy>(2008) 등이 있으며, <파농이 진정으로 말하고자 했던 것What Fanon Really Said>이 곧 출판될 예정이다. 고든은 예일 대학교에서 박사학위를 받은 후, 브라운 대학교, 예일 대학교, 퍼듀 대학교에서 학생들을 가르쳤으며, 현재 템플 대학교 철학과 교수, 인종과 사회사상 연구소 소장으로 있다. 그리고 그는 2013년 가을부터 코네티컷 대학교 철학과와 아프리카계 미국인 연구소에서 교육과 연구를 지속할 예정이다.
