영국 맨체스터 출신으로서 옥스퍼드대학교에서 지리학으로 학사학위를 취득한 후, 노동당 집권 시 영국 총리를 역임했던 제임스 해럴드 윌슨이 설립했던 런던 환경연구센터에서 1968년부터 1980년까지 재직했다. 이 기간 중 1972년에 펜실베이니아대학교에서 지역과학으로 석사학위를 취득했다. 이후 1980년에 미국 사회과학원으로 잠시 자리를 옮겨 산업입지연구원으로 재직하다가, 1982년부터 영국 방송대학(Open University)에서 사회과학부 지리학교수로 임용된 후 27년 동안 재직했다. 이 기간 학술적 공로를 인정받아 2002년에 영국학사원(British Academy) 특별회원이 되었다. 2009년 9월 30일에 공식적으로 방송대학을 은퇴했음에도 불구하고, 여전히 몇몇 연구 프로젝트에 참여하거나 저술 및 강연 활동을 하면서 학술적, 정치적 활동을 이어가고 있다. 도린 매시의 연구는 1970년대부터 지금에 이르기까지 인문지리학 및 관련 사회과학 전반의 향방에 큰 영향을 끼쳐 왔으며, 다양한 사회이론을 섭렵하면서 공간 및 공간 관계의 복잡성이라는 지리적 화두를 학술적, 정치적 장의 중심으로 끌어들이는 데에 기여하였다. 한국에 소개된 매시의 저술로서 『공간, 장소, 젠더(정현주 역, 2015)』가 있다.
