미국 애틀란타주 출신으로 프린스턴 대학을 졸업하자마자 포병 장교로 6.25에 참전해 한국과 깊은 인연을 맺게 된 그는 클린턴 前대통령으로부터 미군의 ‘노근리 학살사건’에 대한 美 국방부 자문위원 중 한 사람으로 위촉된 바 있다. 그는 워싱턴포스트지에서의 25년을 포함해 총 40년간의 언론생활을 통해 공익봉사에 대한 프린스턴大의 우드로 윌슨상 등 많은 언론상을 수상했다. 현재 미국 워싱턴 D.C.에 있는 존스홉킨스대 한미관계연구소 명예소장으로 있다.
