영국 케임브리지 대학교(University of Cambridge)의 실험심리학과 교수다. 그는 케임브리지 대학교에서 1968년 자연과학으로 학사 학위를, 1971년에 심리음향학으로 박사 학위를 받았다. 뉴욕 시립대학 브루클린 칼리지(Brooklyn College, the City University of New York), 캘리포니아 버클리 대학교(University of California at Berkeley) 방문교수였으며, 네덜란드 에인트호벤 지각연구원(Institute of Perception Research, Eindhoven, the Netherlands)의 판 휴튼 펠로(van Houten Fellow)였다. 주요 연구 분야는 소리의 지각, 정상 청력자와 청력장애인의 청각 메커니즘, 청각 능력과 음성 지각 사이의 관계, 감각신경성 청력소실 환자를 위한 보청기의 신호처리 설계, 하이파이 오디오의 설계와 특성 연구, 음악과 악기음의 지각 등이다. 그는 런던왕립학회(Royal Society of London), 미국음향학회(Acoustical Society of America)를 비롯한 여러 학술 단체의 특별 회원이며, 2003년에 생리음향학, 심리음향학 분야의 연구 업적 공로로 미국음향학회로부터 은메달을 받은 것을 비롯해 많은 상을 수여 받았다. 열다섯 권의 책을 펴내고 오백 편이 넘는 학술 논문과 저술을 발표하였다.
