캐나다 사이먼프레이저대학 특훈교수이며, 카이스트 과학저널리즘 대학원과 인문사회학부에서 부교수로 재직했다. 연세대학교 커뮤니케이션대학원 방문교수, 고려대학교 미디어학부 Global Professor를 역임했다. 주요 연구 분야는 초국가적 문화연구, 디지털 플랫폼과 디지털 게임, 인공지능(AI)과 문화산업, 글로벌라이제이션, 문화정치경제학 등이다. 주요 저서로 Understanding Korean Webtoon Culture: Transmedia Storytelling, Digital Platforms, and Genres(2022), Artificial Intelligence in Cultural Production: Critical Perspectives on Digital Platforms (2021), New Korean Wave: transnational cultural power in the age of social media (2016), 『한류 신화에 관한 10가지 논쟁』 등이 있다. 2022년에 국제 커뮤니케이션 학회 석학회원(ICA Fellow)으로 선정되었으며, 사이먼프레이저대학의 The Transnational Culture and Digital Technology Lab 소장으로 활동 중이다.
