1924년에 태어났다. 프린스턴대학에서 전설적인 올리버 스트렁크를 사사하고, 옥스퍼드대학의 헤더 교수(1972~74)로 지낸 2년간의 외유를 제외하곤 1952년 이후 버클리 캘리포니아주립대학에서 교수로 재직했다. 대학에서 음악학을 가르치는 일 외에도, 24세의 젊은 나이부터 「허드슨 리뷰」의 음악비평가로 활약(1948~62)하며, 독특한 비평적 글쓰기 스타일로 전문음악인에서 일반 음악애호가까지 두터운 독자층을 확보하고 있다. 2006년 현재 버클리 캘리포니아주립대학의 명예교수로 재직하며 왕성한 연구와 집필 활동을 하고 있다. 지은 책으로 <음악을 생각한다 Contemplating Music>, <Opera as Drama>, <The Elizabethan Madrigal>, <>, <The Beethoven Quartets>, <Write All These Down> 등이 있다.
