1946∼2002. 영국학사원 회원. 케임브리지대 크라이스츠 칼리지에서 수학했으며, 런던 유니버시티 칼리지에 있는 웰컴 트러스트 의학사연구소 소장과 사회사 교수를 역임했다. 『광기의 사회사』『인류 최대의 혜택: 인류 의학사』『케임브리지 의학사』『이성의 시대의 육체』『의학의 역사』 등 의학사 분야와, 『인간이 자연에 통달하다: 과학의 25세기』『18세기 과학』 등 과학사 분야, 『18세기 영국 사회』 등 사회사 분야를 중심으로 100여 종의 책을 집필, 편집했다. 2002년 심장마비로 별세.
