1944년 영국 옥스퍼드에서 태어났다. 수학자였던 아버지 제이콥 브로노우스키(Jacob Bronowski)와 조각가였던 어머니 리타 코블렌츠(Rita Coblentz)의 영향으로 어린 시절부터 인문학과 자연과학의 경계를 넘나드는 다양한 영역에 관심을 가졌다. 케임브리지 대학에서 박사학위 논문의 주제로 연구했던 프랜시스 베이컨에 관한 저작을 내놓은 1974년부터 2015년 세상을 떠날 때까지, 르네상스에서 과학혁명 그리고 17세기 네덜란드의 역사에 이르기까지 근대 초 유럽의 역사에 관한 다양한 저서를 출간했다. 특히 그리스어와 라틴어를 비롯한 다섯 개의 언어에 능통했던 덕분에 그의 연구 영역은 지리적인 차원에서 유럽 전역을 아우를 뿐만 아니라 주제의 측면에서도 지성사에서 과학사 그리고 예술사에서 문화사의 경계를 넘나들었다. 저서로 Francis Bacon: Discovery and the Art of Discourse (1974), Worldly Goods: A New History of the Renaissance (1996, 국역본: 『상품의 역사』, 영림카디널, 2003), Going Dutch: How England Plundered Holland’s Glory (2008), Temptation in the Archives: Essays in Golden Age Dutch Culture (2015) 등이 있다.
