오스만 제국 후반부의 사회사와 경제사 분야에서 중요한 저서와 편저를 다수 발표하였고, 오스만 사학계에서 선도적인 위치를 차지하고 있는 석학이다. 1987년 이후 뉴욕 빙엄턴 대학 역사학과 교수로 있으면서 비교 노동사와 비교 세계사를 가르치고 있다. 최근 저서로는 ??산업혁명 시기의 오스만 가내수공업Ottoman Manufacturing in the Age of the Industrial Revolution??(Cambridge, 1993)과 ??오스만 제국 경제 ? 사회사, 1300-1914 An Economic and Social History of the Ottoman Empire, 1300-1914??(할릴 이날즉과 공저, Cambridge, 1994)가 있다.
