르네상스 시대 대표적인 조각가로, 바티칸에 있는 산피에트로 대성당을 설계했으며, 〈다비드〉, 〈피에타〉 같은 조각상들과 시스티나 성당의 〈최후의 심판〉, 〈천지 창조〉 같은 프레스코화를 통해 천재 예술가로 이름을 남겼다. 독실한 가톨릭 교도였던 그는 결혼하지 않고 평생 혼자 살면서 300여 편의 낭만적인 소네트와 마드리갈을 썼다.
