미국 뉴욕시립대학교(City University of New York) 대학원 철학과 석학교수(distinguished professor)이다. 도덕철학, 사회정치철학, 윤리학, 페미니스트 철학 분야의 대표적인 석학이다. 미국철학회(American Philosophical Association) 동부지부 학회장을 역임하기도 했으며, 여성철학회(Society of Women in Philosophy)에서 주는 올해의 여성철학자로 뽑히기도 했다. 헬드의 저작과 사상에 관한 논문들을 묶은 책(Norms and Values: Essays on the Work of Virginia Held)이 출판되기도 했다. 주요 편저서로는 Rights and Goods: Justifying Social Action(Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1989), Feminist Morality: Transforming Culture, Society, and Politics(Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1993), The Ethics of Care: Personal, Political, and Global(Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2006), How Terrorism in Wrong: Morality and Political Violence(Oxford: Oxford University Press) 등이 있다. 그 외에도 100편이 넘는 논문들과 북챕터가 있다.
