미국 시러큐스대학교(Syracuse University) 맥스웰 학부(Maxwell School) 지리학과 석학교수이며, 2017년부터 스웨덴 웁살라대학교(Uppsala University) 경제사회지리학과 교수를 겸하고 있다. 1992년 러트거스대학교(Rutgers University)에서 닐 스미스와 함께 연구하면서 박사학위를 받았다. 저명한 급진주의적 지리학자로, 특히 문화이론 및 도시이론에 관심을 가지고 연구하고 있다. 『문화정치와 문화전쟁: 비판적 문화지리학(Cultural Geography: A Critical Introduction)』(2001), The Right to the City: Social Justice and the Fight for Public Space(2003) 등의 주요 저서가 있으며, Justice, Power and the Political Landscape(2009) 등의 책을 엮었다.
