시인이자 비평가. 1952년생. 디킨슨대학교에서 영문학과 인류학을 전공하고, 존스홉킨스대학교에서 시학으로 석사학위, 펜실베이니아대학교에서 민속학으로 박사학위를 받았다. 1978년부터 1997년까지 필라델피아 템플대학교 영문학과 교수로 재직했으며, 2005년 미국시인학회장을 역임했으며, 현재 프린스턴대학교 영문학과에서 시사(詩史), 시학, 미학을 가르치고 있다. 시집으로는 전미도서비평가협회상을 수상한 『콜롬바리움(Columbarium)』(2003)을 비롯해 『노란 별들과 얼음(Yellow Stars and Ice)』(1981), 『벌집(The Hive)』(1987), 『숲(The Forest)』(1995) 등이 있으며, 예술에 관한 에세이집 『오픈 스튜디오 : 예술과 미학에 관한 에세이들(The Open Studio : Essays in Art and Aesthetics)』(2004), 비평서 『난센스(Nonsense)』(1989), 『글쓰기라는 범죄 : 재현에 대한 구속의 문제들(Crimes of Writing : Problems in the Containment of Representation)』(1991), 『시인의 자유 : 만든다는 것에 관한 비망록(The Poet’s Freedom : A Notebook on Making)』(2011) 등이 있다.
